If you've ever tried to import an .ofx file into QuickBooks and gotten "file type not supported", you've hit Intuit's most annoying restriction: QuickBooks Web Connect only accepts .qbo files, even though .qbo *is* .ofx with one extra header.
Here's the fix — and why you don't need a $30/month converter to do it.
What's actually different between OFX and QBO?
Almost nothing. A .qbo file is a standard OFX 1.02 / 2.0 document with two extra tags inside the block:
<INTU.BID>12345</INTU.BID>
<INTU.USERID>your-user</INTU.USERID>That's it. Intuit uses BID (Bank ID) to identify which bank the file came from. If your bank doesn't pay Intuit for a BID, they ship plain OFX and you're stuck.
Our converter generates a valid QBO file with a synthetic BID that QuickBooks Desktop and Online accept on import.
How to convert OFX to QBO
1. Open convertbank.online/tools/ofx-to-qbo 2. Drag your .ofx file in 3. Pick "QuickBooks Online" or "QuickBooks Desktop" 4. Download the .qbo file 5. In QuickBooks: Banking → Upload from file → Browse → select your .qbo
The full round trip takes under a minute.
Sample OFX file
Download a sample .ofx file to test the flow end-to-end before using a real bank export.
What about Mint, Quicken, and Wise exports?
- Mint (RIP) exports CSV — use CSV → QBO instead - Quicken exports QFX — use QFX → CSV then CSV → QBO, or import QFX directly into the OFX → QBO tool - Wise / Revolut / PayPal — see our PayPal to QuickBooks guide
Why not just enter transactions manually?
A 200-line statement takes ~90 minutes to type and you'll make 3-5 errors. The .qbo path takes 60 seconds and is 100% accurate because QuickBooks reads the same fields the bank exported.
