If your TMS or ERP rejects a CAMT.053 file with a vague "schema error", you need a validator before you can do anything else. Here's how to validate any CAMT.053 (or CAMT.052 / CAMT.054) file against the official ISO 20022 schema — without uploading sensitive bank data anywhere.
What CAMT.053 is
CAMT.053 ("Bank to Customer Statement") is the ISO 20022 XML replacement for SWIFT MT940. SEPA banks (Deutsche Bank, BNP Paribas, ING, Santander, UniCredit, etc.) ship it as the standard end-of-day statement format. Corporate treasury teams use it to feed cash positions into SAP, Kyriba, GTreasury, and other TMS platforms.
Why files fail validation
The most common reasons CAMT files break on import:
- Wrong schema version — banks ship 02, 04, 06, or 08; your ERP only accepts one
- Invalid BIC — must be 8 or 11 chars, all uppercase
- Bad IBAN — country code + check digits + BBAN, with country-specific length
- Amount/currency mismatch —
Ccyattribute missing onelements - Date format errors — must be ISO
YYYY-MM-DD(notDD/MM/YYYY) - Missing mandatory elements —
,,, - Namespace mismatch —
